Helping Children and Teens Feel Understood and Supported

Children and teenagers may not always know how to explain what they are experiencing. Their difficulties may appear as anxiety, anger, withdrawal, low confidence, school avoidance or changes in behaviour.

CHEERS provides a safe and supportive space for young people to understand their emotions, develop practical coping skills and manage everyday challenges more confidently.

When May Counselling Be Helpful?

Counselling may be helpful when your child or teenager is experiencing:

  • Anxiety, persistent worries or fears
  • Low mood or reduced motivation
  • Anger and emotional outbursts
  • Low confidence or negative self-talk
  • Friendship or social difficulties
  • School stress or examination anxiety
  • Bullying, grief or family changes
  • School refusal or difficulty adjusting
  • Difficulty managing emotions and behaviour

You do not need to know exactly what type of support your child requires before contacting us. An initial consultation can help clarify the next step.

How We Support Your Child

Support is personalised according to the young person’s age, needs and comfort level. Depending on the counsellor and presenting concerns, sessions may include:

Emotional or Anger Management

Recognising emotions, understanding triggers and learning healthier ways to respond to frustration, anger or distress.

Anxiety and Mood Support

Developing practical strategies to manage worries, stress, low mood and unhelpful thinking patterns.

Friendship Skills

Practising communication, perspective-taking, personal boundaries, conflict resolution and ways to develop healthier relationships.

Confidence and Resilience

Helping young people recognise their strengths, respond to setbacks and develop a more balanced view of themselves.

Sibling and Parent’s Skills Training

We believe in involving the entire family in the counselling process. Our sibling and parent skills training sessions help improve family dynamics, ensuring that everyone is working together to support the child’s emotional growth.

Building Executive Functioning Skills

Executive functioning skills such as organisation, time management, and focus are critical to a child’s academic success. Our counselling incorporates these skills, helping children apply them to their schoolwork and daily responsibilities.

My children had help and support from Cheers since they were in primary school. The holistic approach from Cheers has benefited my children in their learning journey up to end of secondary school. They became self-aware, confident, independent and learned to rely on their strengths while addressing areas to be improved. Cheers is a viable option if parents need an alternative channel for their child.

When my child first visited the centre for his social anxiety and selective mutism issues. I'm surprise to that interactive with Ms Ming Ying so well (usually he doesn't warm up so quickly with stranger). After assessment, now my child is attending social skills class with Ms Kayce. She is always so patient and encouraging to him. She even find volunteers to help practise with him on social scenario. I can see he is slowly overcoming his social anxiety. Thank you Ms Ming Ying and Ms Kayce!

My son, Rex, has been with Teacher Ming for 6 years, taking English Tuition as well as counselling and social skills classes. Teacher Ming's methods have yield postive results for Rex. Her patience, calmness and kind encouragement always set Rex at ease whenever he encountered challenges academically, emotionally and socially. She is also knowledgeable and readily provides advice and listening ear to parents. Rex also took Maths tuition under Teacher Kaylie since Nov 2024. Teacher Kaylie is equally patient, and is experienced in breaking down the concepts to make it easier for Rex to comprehend. As Rex completes his Secondary School journey this year, we would like to convey our appreciation to Teacher Ming and Teacher Kaylie. Thank you for supporting and helping Rex! ☺️

We first approached Ms Ming in 2025 to have an IQ assessment done for our son, whom we suspected might be gifted. Ms Ming administered the assessment with great professionalism and prepared the final report promptly, with clear recommendations on how we could further support his development. Based on how comfortable and happy our son was with Ms Ming, we decided to continue with intervention sessions focusing on social boundaries, and we quickly saw positive changes in his behaviour. After each session, Ms Ming always took the time to share feedback on their interactions and his progress with us. Our son is now having executive function sessions with Ms Kayce, with similar success, and he is always looking forward to spending time at Cheers. Thank you, Ms Ming and Ms Kayce!

Dr. Ming has been caring for my child for years now, and choosing to work with her is hands down one of the best decisions we’ve made for our family. Those early, formative years can feel so overwhelming, but having her guidance has made all the difference. What makes Dr. Ming truly special is that her care doesn't stop with the kids. She has a rare gift for tuning into what we as parents are going through, offering support and empathy right when we need it most. My child genuinely looks forward to every single session, which speaks volumes. If you are looking for someone who will truly invest in your child and stand by your family through the challenging times, I cannot recommend Dr. Ming enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need a diagnosis to attend counselling?

No. Counselling may support young people experiencing emotional, behavioural, social or school-related concerns, whether or not they have a formal diagnosis.

This varies according to the concerns, goals, readiness for change and support available outside the sessions. Progress and goals will be reviewed periodically.

Parent involvement depends on the child’s age and needs. The counsellor may provide parent guidance while also maintaining an appropriate level of privacy for the young person.

Our counsellors are fully qualified professionals with specialised training in child psychology and counselling. Each counsellor holds relevant certifications and has years of experience working with children and families. Our team is committed to using evidence-based practices to support the emotional and psychological well-being of every child. Regular professional development ensures that our counsellors remain up-to-date with the latest research and techniques in the field.

The length of time it takes to see results from child counselling services can vary depending on the child’s individual needs and the issues being addressed. Some children may show improvement after just a few sessions, while others may require longer-term counselling to achieve significant changes. Generally, parents can expect to see gradual improvements over several weeks.

Counselling is confidential. With parental consent, CHEERS may liaise with school staff or other professionals when doing so would support the child.
